What is JDC West? 

JDC West is the largest undergraduate business competition in Western Canada. This three-day event is held every January and is designed to challenge students to work towards becoming well-rounded business leaders. Twelve of Western Canada’s top universities from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, combining for over 600 students, compete within four categories: Academic, Debate, Athletics and Social. ThIs year the competition is held at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.



The academic portion of the competition consists of 30 students, divided up in to 9 Academic Cases and an Entrepreneurial Pitch.

Each category is given 3 hours to analyze a specialized case and prepare a 20 minute presentation for a panel of judges that are comprised of industry professionals and experts. 

The 10 categories are: Accounting, Business Strategy, Business Technology, Debate, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing, and Operations Management. 



The Debate Competition is a Canadian Parliamentary Style Debate. This team is made up of four members, 3 with speaking roles and 1 note taker that partake in a 42 minute debate. The two competing teams are assigned a role, Side Government or Side Opposition, and have 30 minutes to prepare their argument for the given resolution.  



The Athletics team is made up of 8 highly talented individuals that get to showcase their athletic ability. This year the sports being played are Tsegball and D-Hoops. Throughout the year, this team trains hard on and off the court to win Prairie Cup and the JDC West competition. Athletics is full of excitement and passion, ultimately designed to encourage a team atmosphere and well-rounded business students




The most insane portion of the competition. This is were 4 competitors, two males, two females, test their mind and body in a series of 10 challenges while in full costumes. These challenges can be anywhere and at anytime throughout the weekend and will showcase your teams creativity, athleticism, and knowledge. Becoming a Sochie you are guaranteed a few things: No voice by the end of the weekend, 50 new best friends across the country, and finding a wild side you may have never seen before.
